How to Choose Your First Trail
Your first hike should feel like an invitation — not a test.
Choosing your first hiking trail can feel overwhelming. With thousands of paths around the world and dozens in your own region, how do you know where to begin? Don’t worry. We’ll walk you through the essentials so your first hike is a confident, comfortable experience — and hopefully, the start of something amazing.
1. Know Your Why
Are you looking for:
- Peace and solitude?
- A fitness boost?
- Family time outdoors?
- A photo-worthy adventure?
Your motivation shapes the type of trail you’ll enjoy most — from city greenways to rugged nature reserves.
2. Keep It Easy
For your first hike, choose a trail that’s:
- Under 5 km (3 miles) one way or as a loop
- Well-marked (look for established signs, official routes)
- Low elevation gain (avoid steep hills for now)
Tip: Look up “easy” or “family-friendly” in your region’s trail apps or websites.
3. Research Ahead
Before you go, check:
- Distance + terrain
- Weather forecast
- Trail surface (gravel, dirt, boardwalk?)
- Facilities (toilets, water, car park)
- Recent reviews — see what other walkers say
4. Use the Tools
- Explore our Search Trails or Map Search for beginner-friendly routes near you
- Browse Trail Reports and see where others have walked
- Ask for suggestions in our Forum
5. Start Local
You don’t need to drive hours to “get into nature.” Even a 30-minute riverside loop or a park circuit can offer all the mental and physical benefits of hiking.
6. Go with a Friend (or Solo Safely)
First time? Consider inviting a buddy or joining a local group. Solo is great too — just be sure to:
- Share your location
- Stick to popular trails
- Pack a few essentials (see Gear Up Smart)
Still unsure where to start? Ask for trail suggestions in our Beginner Forum — we’re here to help.
